Arne Slot fights for Liverpool future as pressure mounts and replacement shortlist emerges

Arne Slot’s position at Liverpool has become increasingly fragile after the club plunged into its worst spell of results in more than 70 years. Liverpool have lost nine of their last 12 matches across all competitions, including three consecutive defeats by three goals. The latest blow came in a 4-1 Champions League humiliation at the hands of PSV, intensifying scrutiny on the Dutch manager.

Slot insists he still has backing from Fenway Sports Group, who, for now, appear willing to give him time to correct the team’s collapse. He acknowledged, however, that the pressure is severe and rising, hinting that the board’s patience will not be unlimited if results continue to spiral.

Anfield reacted angrily after the PSV defeat, with loud boos signalling that supporters are reaching the end of their tolerance. The unrest mirrors public criticism from Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher, who argued that Slot has “one week to save his job.” According to Carragher, Liverpool must collect at least seven points from league fixtures against West Ham, Sunderland and Leeds to stabilise the situation.

If Liverpool decide to make a change, Xabi Alonso is viewed as the leading candidate. Alonso only joined Real Madrid during the summer, but reports of tension with Vinicius Jr have raised questions about how long he will remain at the Bernabeu. Jurgen Klopp, now serving as Head of Global Football at Red Bull, is also being considered, alongside Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner and Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola.

Slot remains one of the bookmakers’ top picks to be the next Premier League manager dismissed, though Leeds’ Daniel Farke is currently under even more immediate threat. Despite the odds and the public pressure, internal indications suggest Liverpool are not preparing to remove Slot right now. Key decision-makers reportedly still believe he can steer the team back on track and note his status as one of the few coaches to win the Premier League in his first season in England.
