Arsenal set to activate £44m release clause for high-impact Bundesliga striker in major Andrea Berta move

Arsenal are reportedly weighing up a move for Borussia Dortmund forward Serhou Guirassy, with claims suggesting the club could activate his £44m release clause in January. The interest comes as sporting director Andrea Berta evaluates potential additions to reinforce an already dominant squad. Arsenal’s form this season has been exceptional, highlighted by major victories over Tottenham and Bayern Munich and a 16-game unbeaten streak that has put them six points clear at the top of the Premier League.

Despite their momentum, Arsenal are still exploring ways to strengthen their attacking options. The club has already been linked with Porto striker Samu Aghehowa, but new reports from Germany indicate that Guirassy has emerged as a serious alternative. His contract includes a clause that can only be triggered by elite European clubs, a group Arsenal belongs to alongside Manchester City, Real Madrid, Barcelona, and others.

The clause becomes active in January, but Guirassy is understood to be open to delaying any major move until the summer. Whether Arsenal will choose to act mid-season remains unclear, especially given their current squad depth and long-term planning. The striker has been prolific since joining Dortmund, scoring 47 goals and establishing himself as one of the Bundesliga’s most consistent finishers.

However, Arsenal’s need for another centre-forward is debatable. They invested heavily in Viktor Gyokeres last summer, and the squad already includes Kai Havertz, Gabriel Jesus, and Mikel Merino, all capable of playing through the middle. Injuries have affected that group recently, which may explain why the club is considering additional cover, but all three are expected to return soon.

Gyokeres’ six goals in 14 games have not matched the early expectations, but there is no indication the club views him as a failed signing. The Swede and Havertz could be back in the lineup as early as this weekend, while Jesus is targeting a return next month after a knee injury. His future beyond this season is uncertain, and a potential departure could influence the club’s transfer priorities.

Even with Guirassy’s strong goal record, his age complicates matters. Turning 30 in March, he does not fit the younger profile Berta and Arteta prefer for long-term squad building. Arsenal may therefore continue monitoring younger alternatives such as Levante forward Etta Eyong, who aligns more closely with the club’s strategy for sustainable attacking depth.
